Christmas time is the most magical time of the year to eat, drink and be merry. However, all those celebrations could add around £50 to your energy bill.
To help you cut energy costs this Christmas, we’re giving you 7 tips to reduce the amount of energy you use.
1. Switch your traditional fairy lights to LED ones
LED lightbulbs use 90% less energy than old fashioned light bulbs. It costs around £9 to keep Christmas lights on during December. However, if you switch to LED fairy lights, they would only cost you only 90p. Also LED lights last 25 times longer than traditional ones. This means you will need to replace them less often, so you can spend your money elsewhere.
2. Make the most of your Christmas lights
We all love to show off our Christmas displays. However, there is no point in having them on if everyone is asleep. Turn your lights off when you head to bed or during the day when no one’s at home.
3. Use your oven efficiently
An average turkey takes around three hours to cook in the oven, costing you about £2, which is equivalent to an average household’s full-day energy costs.
When you cook your turkey, try not to open the oven door too often and cook your vegetables alongside it at the same time.
4. Reduce your thermostat
With all that cooking and all those guests in your house, it might be a good idea to turn down your thermostat.
5. Board games
Spend time with your family, turn off all the electrical equipment and enjoy some needed time together. Pull out all those board games we know you have laying around the house and have fun. Although, maybe hide the Monopoly if you want to avoid a big fight.
6. Wear your Christmas jumper and socks with pride
If after all the cooking and celebrations you are still feeling the cold, pull out that ugly Christmas sweater and those Christmas socks rather than turning up the heating.
Christmas time is the most fabulous time to give yourself a gift of some significant savings on your energy bill.
